Victoria Mixon writes of:

a conundrum in writing advice, which is that you must both plan your novel and not plan it, both know where you’re going and have not the foggiest clue, both plot a good, gripping, well-structured story and let the characters take you where they will. You get half this advice from half your advisors and mentors, and half of it from the other half.

That’s the difficulty. It’s the freedom, too, and it’s the fun.
